Steingerður Sonja Þórisdóttir spoke to us, the Hringekjuhjónin, on behalf of the newspaper in anticipation of our opening on January 6, 2021, which was published in the newspaper on January 10, 2021.
The couple Davíð Örn and Jana Maren recently opened the pawn shop Hringekjun at Þórunnartún 2. They both lost their jobs in the first wave of COVID and subsequently decided to do something interesting together.
The couple Davíð Örn Jóhannsson and Jana Maren Óskarsdóttir have been making great speeches and using their time well during the pandemic. They opened the shop Hringekjan at Þórunnartún 2, which many have Icelandicized and called a flea market. There, people can sell used goods and give them a new life. They both lost their jobs in the first wave of COVID-19 but decided to think of solutions and work on opening Hringekjan.
"We decided to try to use the summer to create a new project to work on together. After traveling far and wide around the country this summer, this idea came up at a bongo party in Seyðisfjörður in August, and we have been working hard on this project ever since," says Davíð Örn.

Tell me about the origin of the name, Hringekjan?
"We spent a long weekend at a summer house in Kirkjubæjarklaustur in September where we did a lot of thinking to find a name that would be Icelandic and have a good connection to what we stand for. Hringekjan was ultimately chosen as it is a beautiful Icelandic word that has this connection to the circular economy that we were striving for," says Jana Maren.
They themselves have long been passionate about recycling.
"Over the years, we have bought a lot of second-hand clothing and household items. It must also be emphasized that we live in times where we all need to wake up from consumerism if we are not going to permanently leave the earth. Hringekjan is our contribution to this fight and we hope that it will be accompanied by increased awareness in the future," says Davíð.
