- They are environmentally friendly and ecological, but textile production is estimated to cause between 8 and 10% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Used clothes have already been made and therefore do not increase emissions. In addition, you are helping to reduce water waste and chemical pollution associated with modern production methods. The textile industry is the second most polluting industry in the world after oil.
- They are cheaper. Used clothes and even designer gems are often cheaper than brand new garments. Plus, it's likely that no one has exactly the same garment!
- They last longer. If you buy a quality used garment, it is likely to last you a long time if you take good care of it. Clothes were made to last until not so long ago, but today there is so much mass-produced clothing that people buy endlessly that it is not very good quality. Older garments, especially those that are 20-100 years old, are especially good quality.
- You are reducing the pressure on landfills. We produce about 17 million tons of textiles per year, while Icelanders throw away an average of 13 kg of textiles each year. Much of this is actually in good condition and can be used for much longer, which would be the case if more people recycled clothing.
- By using recycled clothes, you are helping to reduce the demand for fast fashion. And in doing so, you are reducing the demand for slave labor and contributing to a fairer and cleaner world.
