Icelanders threw away over 20 kg of clothing per person in 2020, and it is increasing every year.
In 2016, it averaged 15 kilograms, according to a summary by the Ministry of the Environment, and just over 8 kilograms in 2012. That is more than doubling in just eight years. The amount of clothing imported into the country is large, having increased by 50% since 2014; in 2018, almost 4,890 tons of clothing (not including shoes) were imported. So there is plenty to take for resale.
Every garment that is produced requires energy and water consumption and results in the release of pollutants. Producing just one pair of jeans, for example, requires almost 11,000 liters of water .
By buying or selling used clothing, you save energy, materials, and water used in the production of new clothing. The quality of used clothing in Iceland is generally high, and everyone should be able to find something to their liking.
